June 25, 2024 - City of Shelbyville Approves Final Budget and Property Tax Rate for 2024-2025
by Josh Blevins

At a brief, 25-minute meeting Tuesday afternoon, the Shelbyville City Council adopted the Annual Budget and Tax Rate for the Fiscal Year Beginning July 1, 2024, and Ending June 30, 2025. The city property tax rate will remain the same $1.48.

Two items on the budget were changed from the budget meeting held on June 12. First, the pay raises for employees was increased from the previously-discussed 3% to 4% for all city employees. There was also a failed attempt to raise that amount to 5%. Council members Christie, Isaacs, and Feldhaus voted for the 5% raises. Mayor Carroll broke the 3-3 tie with a no vote. The 4% passed 4-2 with yes votes by Turnbow, Christie, Haile and Ewing.

The second change in the budget from previous discussions was an increase in funding for the Shelbyville-Bedford County Public Library. The city's funding for the library will be increasing to $164,812 which is the first increase they have given the library in five years. The increased library funding passed by a vote of 4-2. Council members Turnbow, Isaacs, Haile, and Feldhaus were the yes votes.
