May 10, 2024 - Jennings Lane Property to Remain Zoned R1

City Council Meeting Highlights

Thursday afternoon beginning at 4:30 pm, Shelbyville City Council met in a marathon session that opened with Tad Craig interviewing for a Power Board position from a hotel room in Grenada (the two members already on the board were reappointed) and ended with a round of applause for a new student member on the Park Board. In between, there was lots of discussion and a number of votes.

The item on the agenda that drew a full room, the rezoning of a parcel of land on Jennings Lane from R-1 to R-2, ended in a 5-1 vote to deny the rezoning. All but Councilmember Feldhaus agreed with keeping the property as R-1.

Also by a vote of 5-1 (Councilmember Isaacs voted no), the council approved, on first reading an amendment to city ordinances that would outlaw camping and storing personal property on public property without permisssion.

The third 5-1 vote of the night came on a motion to authorize the Mayor to send a letter to the Chamber of Commerce inquiring about the denial of the city’s membership in the Chamber. Councilmember Feldhaus was the lone no vote on this item.

Among the other items, there was unanimous approval of Certificates of Good Moral Character for the owners of the to-be-opened Union Street Wine and Spirits at 730 Union Street (the old Hopps Fuel Express building at the intersection with Colloredo).

There was also unanimous approval of new, higher fees for Planning and Community Development and for the calling of an election for November 5 of this year for three council seats (Wards 1, 3 and 5).

This Saturday morning at 10:00 am, David and Josh will discuss these items along with other news that matters here in Shelbyville and Bedford County.
